Ah, Spring. Well… Spring in the Northern Hemisphere anyways. There’s nothing like rising temperatures to motivate and inspire. I bet some of you are madly cleaning the clutter out of your houses, cleaning the winter grime out of your vehicles, thinking about a new haircut, and shopping online for fun and bright colors… That’s what I do anyways. And I get excited because I can exercise outside again. Anyone else related to the “spring resolution” to get outdoors again?
A lot of people start running or walking in the spring. I’m not a long distance runner but I love me some sprints. Whether you’re a hard core runner, a sprinter, or a walker why not incorporate some strength training exercises? There’s nothing better than multitasking for a parent… Think of it like a 2 for 1 deal. You won’t need any equipment besides what you might find around you. And I don’t think you’ll notice a few extra minutes added to your run. ☺
If you don’t already, think about changing your route to pass by handy items like a park bench, a low wall, a set of stairs, or a playground. If none of that is available (seriously?) there’s still lots you can do: push-ups, body weight squats, walking lunges, planks, etc…
Have a look through these outdoor strength training exercise ideas. If your run usually lasts for thirty minutes, try stopping every ten minutes and performing a few of these in a circuit (alternate from upper to lower). That will give you a solid three sets. If you have any other ideas, please share! I’ll add it to my list. ☺
