My little sister Janelle has amazing arms. I think if I asked her what her favorite body part is she would say “nothing!” and give me a look, maybe roll her eyes… Because she really doesn’t give herself enough credit.
This is a stay-at-home-Mom who, for the last eight years, has lived in the tiniest town you’ve ever seen (population 450) and has managed for the last three years to be on a consistent weight training and/or cardio plan. NO gyms. NO personal trainers. NO nutritionists. NO childcare. And it’s minus freaking thirty most of the year.
Imagine people staring at you as you jog by them on the street and you know they’re thinking, “what is she doing?” And a few hours later they’re saying to the next person “I saw Janelle running down 4th Avenue this afternoon. I think she was working out!” She doesn’t even have access to some of the foods I would consider staples in my house (quinoa, Greek yogurt, protein powder, oats, ummm fresh-not-frozen chicken breasts!!) because the teeny-tiny little grocery store in town doesn’t carry them!! This is also a woman whose husbands new BFF a few years ago was a deep fryer. Lol! Colin – I’m talking to YOU! Any ounce of energy and stamina this woman has mustered up to workout in the last three years has come from within (or support via the telephone from her two sisters, I hope!).
She’s had highs and lows (she also has three kids ages three, six, and eight – applause please!!!) but I cannot remember her ever being completely “off” exercise. Even when she was pregnant! And I will now share a couple photos she’s sent to me the last few months of her beautiful arm (and she is going to DIE when she reads this!):
I emailed her back immediately and said “tell me what your doing!” And she responded with one part of her current weight training circuit. Here it is:
20 “Girl” Push-ups (or the “real thing” if your so inclined!)
10 Bent over rows (10 on each side)
20 More “Girl” Push-ups
20 Squats to Overhead Press
These pictures have no fake tan (or any tan to speak of, sheesh! Get some sun Sis!) and obviously, no photoshopping… So you know… Nothin’ she should be hiding under sleeves anyways. Good work Nelly!!! I am constantly inspired by you. :)
